Sofa burns - Group Litigation Order approved

The application for a Group Litigation Order to allow those affected by contaminated leather furniture causing “sofa burns” to sue Argos Land of Leather and Walmsleys was approved by Mr Justice Colman Treacy on 5 June in Nottingham Crown Court.

Around a thousand people are thought to be preparing to bring formal personal injury claims against the furniture retailers. Boyes Turner are acting for a significant number of those who have suffered rashes, skin allergies, burns, respiratory problems and other side effects. The cause of the skin and respiratory reactions is believed to be a chemical fungicide known as Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) which is an anti moulding agent. The findings have been reported on the BBC Watchdog programme.

You may have seen the advertisements placed in a number of daily newspapers recently. If you have purchased a leather sofa or recliner in the last three years or so and have had any symptoms such as a rash or breathing problems you should contact us immediately.

Personal injury lawyer, Julia Appleton, of Boyes Turner says:

“Boyes Turner are on the Steering Committee of the Claimant Solicitors who are bringing these personal injury claims and have been closely involved in the application for the Group Litigation Order. We hope that now the matter is before the court the claims can be dealt with swiftly and compensation paid out without further delay. We are also investigating possible product liability claims against SCS and a claim against Harveys furniture retailers in respect of skin complaints and rashes and hope that the Group Litigation Order will assist the process and our discussions with these retailers. We are advising anyone who has experienced skin problems following the purchase of leather furniture to contact us”.
