E-coli outbreak at Godstone Farm
The number of cases arising from the E-coli outbreak at Godstone Farm in Surrey has risen to 64. There are fears that tens of thousands could have been exposed to the infection since it was first identified in August.
E-coli is a type of bacteria that lives in the intestines of humans and animals. Many strains are harmless but others can cause severe and often even life-threatening illnesses.
Those infected may have a claim for compensation against the owners of the farm. Owners and/or occupiers of premises have duties to visitors in respect of dangers on their property. An injured person must show that the owner/occupier of the farm failed to take reasonable care for his or her safety.
Possible allegations of negligence in this instance may be that the farm was not closed quickly enough - it took the farm some two weeks to close following the first identified case in August - and continued to allow children to touch and pet the animals during this time.
